Trinea DX

v1.1.1 · October 29, 2026 · English translation first released September 27, 2026

Trinea (トリネア) is a 1993 Super Famicom action RPG by Yanoman / Japan Art Media, a sequel of sorts to JAM's Game Boy Penta Dragon, and it was only released in Japan. Trinea DX is the complete English translation: all 841 script strings across the three hero scenarios (Hornisse, Sara and Tetsuya “Ryo” Mifune), the opening and ending cutscenes, character profiles, shops, menus and the character-select screen. Version 1.1 adds optional DX improvements on top, and every one of them can be switched off. It has been tested with a full playthrough on MiSTer and on a real SNES Jr.

Highlights

  • Complete English script for all three scenarios. Ryo's and Hornisse's stories and the menus were translated from scratch.
  • A new variable-width 8×11 dialogue font and 8×8 small-font additions, drawn for this project.
  • The ROM is expanded to 32 Mbit (4 MB HiROM) to fit the English script; plain HiROM, no enhancement chips, valid checksum.
  • Less slowdown from a performance patch; game logic is unchanged.
  • Options: in the field hold L+R and tap X turbo, Y hero speed (mainly brings Sara up to her Game Boy speed), A faster monsters, B rumble off. Two blinks mean on, one means off, and settings are saved.
  • Rumble with RumbleShock-style pads on real hardware and MiSTer, on by default.
  • Controls overlay: press Select during play for a pad diagram with your hero's moves.
  • Start skips dialogue from the next prompt on; story flags and battles still happen.

Version history

  • v1.1.1 (Oct 29, 2026): the hidden L+R+Select dialogue-skip toggle is removed; Start always skips dialogue.
  • v1.1 (Oct 28, 2026): the DX features above, plus a final-boss freeze fix, rumble fixes, a save-select drawing fix, corrected Hornisse move labels and the wizard's name spelled “Graph”.
  • v1.0.1 (Oct 13, 2026): fixes dialogue text corrupting the stage collision map.
  • v1.0 (Sep 27, 2026): the complete English translation.

Full details are in the changelog; every move is listed in MOVES.md. Two-player co-op is planned next.

How to patch

Bring your own legally dumped Trinea (Japan) cartridge; no ROM data is distributed. Remove any 512-byte copier header, then apply the IPS with Rom Patcher JS, Flips or Lunar IPS. On MiSTer, FXPak, EverDrive or other real hardware, patch the ROM on a PC first rather than soft-patching.
